CHAPEL HILL– The Carolina gymnastics team opens the 2022 season on Friday night. The Tar Heels host Auburn and Bowling Green for a home tri meet that starts at 7 p.m. in Carmichael Arena. Fans are encouraged to be in their seats early as team introductions get underway at 6:45 p.m.
The 2022 Tar Heels
The 2022 Carolina squad features 21 gymnasts, the largest roster in program history, and is led by first-year head coach Danna Durante. Durante is a 20-year college coaching veteran who guided the University of Georgia to three Super Six appearances during her time in Athens.
She is joined by assistant coach Marie Denick, who is in her fifth year with the program, and first-year assistant coach Amelia Hundley, a former All-American gymnast at the University of Florida.
This season, Tar Heels return All-American and NCAA Regional qualifier Elizabeth Culton, who became the first Carolina gymnast since Courtney Bumpers in 2006 to earn First Team All-American honors last season. Among the other 13 active returners are Hallie Thompson, Emery Summey, Kate Greene, Bri Greenlow and Hannah Nam, who each earned All-EAGL awards last season.
Carolina's roster also features six newcomers: Jenna Cashman, Lali Dekanoidze, Julia Knower, Bella Miller, Isabelle Schaefer and Jayati Sridhar.
The Tar Heels finished the 2021 season with a 11-2 record, going 7-1 in conference. In the preseason, Carolina was picked to finish No. 3 in the EAGL, a conference that includes George Washington, LIU, NC State, New Hampshire, Temple, Towson and Pitt.
Coach Comments
"This is this team's and this staff's debut. This is the first time we get to coach together and coach this group in Carmichael and I'm really excited about that. This team has been working so hard; they've made incredible strides. It will be great to see them kick off the 2022 season," – head coach Danna Durante
