UNC is one of three programs in the country where both the men and women are hosting respective championship games this weekend. Click here for more information regarding the tripleheader taking place in Chapel Hill on Thursday.
The Tar Heels' longstanding tradition of championship soccer continues as their at-large berth is the 29th NCAA Tournament appearance overall and 14th in the last 15 years. Head coach Carlos Somoano, now in his 12th season at the helm, has guided all but one of his squads to a postseason run.
UNC's overall record in the NCAA Tournament is 42-23-10, including a 9-4-1 mark in the first round. In 2021, the Tar Heels advanced to the second round after defeating Loyola Maryland, 4-2, on penalty kicks.
Carolina (8-5-5) enters the contest after dropping a narrow 1-0 loss to No. 4 Syracuse in the Atlantic Coast Conference Quarterfinal on Nov. 6. Currently on a three-game win streak, High Point (10-4-5) posted a 2-0 win over Campbell to clinch the Big South title on Nov. 13.
The winner of Thursday's first-round match in Chapel Hill will advance to the second round on Sunday, Nov. 20, to face No. 5 Stanford (11-2-5) in Stanford, Calif.
A pair of Tar Heels picked up All-ACC accolades earlier this month as fifth-year Milo Garvanian was named to the Second Team and rookie Sam Williams landed on the All-Freshman Team. Garvanian and Akeim Clarke top the roster with four goals each while Garvanian and team captain Tim Schels both have four assists.
Noah Holmes, who had a brace in the conference title game to garner Big South Tournament MVP honors, has 10 goals and 20 points on the season for the Panthers. High Point placed five players on the All-Big South First Team, two on the second team and three on the all-freshman squad while head coach Zach Haines was voted the league's coach of the year.
Thursday will mark the 16th meeting in program history between North Carolina and High Point and the first since 2007. UNC will look to extend its all-time series record which falls in its favor at 13-0-2, including a 9-0-1 mark for games played in Chapel Hill.
