Bawa’s Late Header Sends Men’s Soccer To ACC Quarterfinals
November 2, 2022 | Men's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Ernest Bawa's third goal of the year came at a pivotal moment for the University of North Carolina men's soccer team, which posted a 1-0 victory over Boston College on Wednesday evening at Dorrance Field in the first round of the ACC Tournament.
Following the win, the seventh-seeded Tar Heels (8-4-5, 2-2-4) now advance to the ACC Quarterfinals and are set to take on No. 2 Syracuse, ranked fourth nationally, on Sunday, Nov. 6, in Syracuse, N.Y.
UNC controlled possession from the start, holding an 8-1 advantage in shots throughout the opening frame. Its best chance at getting on the board came in the 16th minute off a free kick from Bawa, but his strike to the top right corner was punched out by Boston College keeper Brennan Klein.
A short pass from Sebastian Schacht set Tim Schels up with a scoring opportunity late in the first half, but his attempt sailed just wide of the left post as both teams went into the break locked at zero.
Continuing to press coming out of the half, the Tar Heels fired off another eight shots in the final 45 minutes. A cross from Bawa found Milo Garvanian at the top of the box for what was nearly the go-ahead goal in the 54th minute, which was again denied by Klein.
Carolina found the chance it was looking for in the 82nd minute off a set piece. Cameron Fisher's corner kick connected with Bawa inside the 6-yard box, whose header bounced off the goal line and into the upper left corner of the net.
UNC finished the contest with 16 shots while its back line held the 10th-seeded Eagles to only five. Bawa had a game-high six shots and Marco Saborio-Perez's lone save of the night was with 47 seconds left in regulation. Klein had five stops for Boston College, which concludes the season at 4-7-5 (1-4-3).
The Tar Heels will trek north to face the Orange for a 6 p.m. ET matchup on ACC Network this Sunday. UNC will be making its 10th overall, and second straight, quarterfinal appearance.
