No. 4 MLAX Dispatches Colgate, 15-9
February 13, 2022 | Men's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL – Chris Gray (3G, 1A) earned his second straight hat trick to wrap up an impressive opening weekend as No. 4 North Carolina (2-0) used a steady attack to take down Colgate (0-2) 15-9 Sunday at Dorrance Field.
"It was a good win, but it's early, and we still need to work on some things as we progress through the season," said UNC coach Joe Breschi. "Offensively, I loved how the midfield is coming together. I also love how we are sharing the ball and creating opportunities."
Jacob Kelly and Lance Tillman finished with two goals and one assist, while UNC used constant defensive pressure and a relentless ride to cause eight turnovers. Nicky Solomon had a solid game, scoring one goal and picking up two assists. Sophomore keeper Collin Krieg held off the Colgate attack and made eight saves for the Tar Heels.
Freshman Dewey Egan and Chase Mullins made vital contributions throughout the game. In the second quarter, Egan earned his first two career goals while Mullins stepped in and won 9-16 faceoffs with four ground balls.
After the Tar Heels jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the first quarter, Colgate answered with a two-goal run to trim the deficit to four by the 14:06 mark in the second quarter. UNC would then outscore the Raiders 5-1 to give the Tar Heels a 12-4 edge at the break.
The second half was all Raiders, as Colgate slowed the game down and used five goals to claw back. The UNC defense stood firm and held off the Colgate rally to earn the win.
North Carolina will return to action next Saturday, Feb. 19, when the Tar Heels host Ohio State at Dorrance Field. Faceoff is slated for 3 p.m.
