WLAX Wins At No. 7 Florida, 15-11

GAINESVILLE, FLA.—Three Tar Heels had hat tricks and Taylor Moreno came up big in goal as the second-ranked North Carolina women's lacrosse team beat seventh-ranked Florida, 15-11, on the road on Saturday afternoon at Dizney Stadium.
Elizabeth Hillman recorded her first career three-goal game and also had a team-high five draw controls for Carolina.
Jamie Ortega and Scottie Rose Growney each added three goals and an assist. Andie Aldave scored twice for UNC. Eight different Tar Heels scored in a balanced offensive attack.
Danielle Pavinelli had six goals and two assists for the Gators.
The Tar Heels improved to 3-0 this season. Florida fell to 1-1.
Carolina went on a 4-0 run in the first quarter after trailing early, 2-1, then posted a 5-0 run spanning the end of the second period and beginning of the third to take control of the contest. Florida scored the game's final three goals after the outcome was out of reach.
During a crucial stretch late in the second quarter, a big save by Moreno led to a goal by Hillman with 45 seconds remaining in the first half, then Olivia Dirks scored with 0:01 remaining to make it 9-6 at intermission.
Carolina started strong in the second half with Aldave scoring the first two goals after the break. UNC's eventual 5-0 run made the score 12-6 before Florida finally scored. Moreno had held the Gators scoreless for a span of 13:39.
UNC outshot Florida, 34-25 and won 16 draws to UF's 13 on the day.
The Tar Heels will be on the road again for their next game, visiting new ACC member Pitt in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Thursday afternoon Feb. 26 at 4 p.m.
