February 20, 2022 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL – North Carolina completed its season-opening three game sweep of Seton Hall on Sunday with a 7-3 victory at Boshamer Stadium. A foursome of Tar Heel pitchers scattered six hits and combined for 13 strikeouts.
After falling behind 1-0 in the second inning, Carolina (3-0) scored seven unanswered runs across the third, fourth and fifth innings to seize control of the game. Junior Angel Zarate drove in a pair of runs while a foursome of hitters had one run each. Sophomore Johnny Castagnozzi and freshman Reece Holbrook collected two hits each.
UNC sophomore pitcher Shawn Rapp earned the victory in relief, striking out three and holding Seton Hall (0-3) hitless in 1.1 innings of work. Seton Hall starting pitcher Brennan O'Neill took the loss, giving up three runs in 3.0 innings.
NOTABLES
• North Carolina swept its season-opening series for the fourth consecutive season (James Madison 2021, Middle Tennessee State 2020, Xavier 2019).
• The Tar Heels improved to 61-11 all-time against Seton Hall. It was their 13th three-game series sweep of the Pirates since the teams first met in 1988.
• Carolina allowed just six total runs this weekend, the fewest they've surrendered in a three-game, season-opening series since 2009, when they also gave up six to VMI.
• UNC finished the series scoring 40 total runs, the most they've scored in a series since 2017 at Boston College (48). It's the most runs the Diamond Heels scored in the initial three games since 2003 when they scored 43 total runs (19 vs. Delaware State, 18 vs. Seton Hall, 6 vs. Seton Hall).
• Freshman Vance Honeycutt hit his third home run of the season and became the first Tar Heel since Seth Williams in 2008 to hit three home runs in the first two games.
• Sophomore Johnny Castagnozzi was the only player to record multiple hits in each game of the series.
• Castagnozzi and junior Danny Serretti each collected seven hits in the series, which was the most in the first three games of the season since Skye Bolt had eight in 2013.
• Freshman Reece Holbrook, who made his first career start, beat out a bunt in the fourth inning and tripled to right field in the eighth.
• Shaddon Peavyhouse made his UNC debut as the starting pitcher, tossing 3.2 innings and striking out four while allowing one run.
• Senior pitchers Gage Gillian and Caden O'Brien made their season debut, and both fanned three batters.
• Freshman Vance Honeycutt swiped two bases on Sunday to bring his season total to three, equaling the most of any returning player on the team from a year ago (Serretti/Zarate 3).
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Seton Hall got on the scoreboard first when Steve Grober scored on a high chopper to second by off the bat of Devin Hack.
• Mac Horvath drew bases loaded walk to plate the Heels' first run of the game in the third inning. Zarate scored the second run of the inning on a fielder's choice before Horvath came around to score on an RBI-single by Alberto Osuna.
• Back-to-back hits from Castagnozzi and Holbrook started the fourth inning and then Zarate singled up the middle to drive them both in. Zarate later scored on a wild pitch to give UNC a 6-1 lead.
• The Tar Heels scored their final run of the game in the fifth on an RBI-single from Patrick Alvarez that knocked in Honeycutt.
• Seton Hall scored two unearned runs in the ninth on a fielding error.
