February 20, 2022 | Men's Basketball
GAME 28
• Carolina hosts Louisville on February 21 in the first of two straight Monday games in the Smith Center (7 p.m, ESPN).
• The Tar Heels are 19-8 overall, 11-5 in the ACC. Carolina beat Virginia Tech, 65-57, in Blacksburg on Saturday.
• Carolina is one win shy of 20 for the season. The Tar Heels have won 20 or more games 61 times.
• Louisville is 12-14, 6-10 after a home win over Clemson, also on Saturday.
• Carolina is tied with Miami for third in the ACC at 11-5, two games behind Duke and a game behind Notre Dame.
• Caleb Love had game highs in points (21) and assists (7), Armando Bacot registered his 20th double-double this season with 12 points and 15 rebounds and added five blocks in the win at Virginia Tech.
• Carolina held the Hokies to 57 points, Tech's fewest at home all season. Tech came into the game second in the nation in three-point percentage, but the Tar Heels limited the Hokies to five of 26 from beyond the arc, a season-low 19.2%.
• Bacot's 15 rebounds in Blacksburg increased his average in ACC games to 14.0 per game. That is the highest in league play since Wake Forest's Tim Duncan averaged 14.9 in 1996-97.
HOME IN THE DOME
• Carolina is 13-2 at the Smith Center this season, but has lost two of its last three home games to Duke and Pittsburgh.
• The Tar Heels are 449-83 all-time in the Smith Center, including 231-65 in ACC play.

UNC 90, @LOUISVILLE 83 (OT)
• Carolina won an overtime game, its first under head coach Hubert Davis, for the first time since beating Miami on 2/9/2019 in Chapel Hill.
• Armando Bacot had 19 points, a career-high tying 22 rebounds and three steals. He became the third Tar Heel (with Billy Cunningham and Lennie Rosenbluth) to have three 20-rebound games in a season.
• Leaky Black scored a season-high 13 points and had four assists. He made three 3FGs for the first time since he hit four at Miami on 1/5/2021.
• Brady Manek led UNC with four threes and 24 points. His 10 field goals matched the second most in his career.
• Louisville made 15 threes, the most in a Tar Heel victory since Iona made 15 in the 2019 NCAA Tournament first round.
• Carolina scored zero fastbreak points (first time since a double-OT loss at Virginia Tech in 2020) and zero bench points (first time this season and first time in a win since 1998-99 against Georgia).
• There were 13 lead changes, which equaled the win over Brown on November 12 for the most lead changes in a game this season.
• El Ellis came off the bench to lead Louisville with 25 points, all in the second half (20) and overtime (5).
MISCELLANEOUS
• The Tar Heels are 14-1 this season when scoring more points off turnovers and 5-7 when the opponents score more points off turnovers. The only loss was last Wednesday against Pittsburgh when the Tar Heels scored 24 points off Pitt turnovers, while the Panthers scored 22. However, Pitt scored 20 of their 22 points off turnovers in the first half as the Panthers built a 17-point lead.
• Turnovers and the opponents cashing in on those errors have been a major storyline this season. Carolina has turned the ball over 12.4 times per game in its eight losses, which have led to 166 points, an average of 20.8 points per game.
• Miami turned UNC's miscues into 30 points in a 28-point Hurricane victory in Coral Gables. In seven of the eight losses the opponents have scored at least 19 points off turnovers (Duke scored the fewest with 24 points).
• Carolina has won six times this season when it allowed fewer than 60 points (53 by UNC Asheville, 51 by Michigan, 50 by App State, 58 by Virginia, 47 by Boston College and 57 by Virginia Tech in Blacksburg).
• Carolina is 9-0 this season when shooting 50% (under Roy Williams UNC was 220-9 when shooting 50% from the floor).
• The Tar Heels are 25th nationally in KenPom's offensive efficiency, scoring 113.3 points per 100 possessions. That is fifth in the ACC behind Duke (10th), Syracuse (17th), Miami (20th) and Virginia Tech (23rd).
• Carolina is allowing 88.0 points in its eight losses and just 65.8 in its 19 victories.
• The Tar Heels are minus 10 in assist-turnovers (89 assists/99 turnovers) in the eight losses, while the opponents are plus 66 (143 assists/77 turnovers).
BRADY NEARING 300 THREES
• Brady Manek, a 6-9 power forward, came to UNC with a track record for making threes. He made 235 in four seasons at Oklahoma, becoming the tallest player in Big 12 history to make 200 threes.
• Manek is second on the Tar Heels this season with 60 threes and third in percentage at .387.
• He has 295 career three-pointers.
• Manek is averaging 2.22 threes per game this season, the second-most by a Tar Heel who measured 6-9 or taller behind only Cameron Johnson, who averaged 2.67 threes in earning first-team All-ACC honors in 2018-19.
• Johnson and Reggie Bullock are the only Tar Heels to play significant time at power forward (the 4) and average more threes per game than Manek, who plays almost exclusively at the 4. Bullock averaged 2.34 threes in 2012-13, when UNC played four perimeter players around James Michael McAdoo at the 5. Johnson also split time at the 3 and 4 in 2018-19.
• Manek is one of three Tar Heels 6-9 or taller to make 50 threes in a season. Cameron Johnson made 96 in 36 games in 2018-19, Ademola Okulaja made 59 in 34 games in 1998-99 and Manek has made 60 in 27 games.

• Sophomore guard Caleb Love made a career-high six three-pointers in Carolina's win over Florida State, including five in the first half as UNC built a 38-point lead.
• Love made five of his six three-pointers in the first half. Those five threes were one more than he made in any of his previous 53 collegiate games. He was the first Tar Heel to make five threes in a half since Cole Anthony hit five in the second half at Syracuse in 2020.
• Love had made four threes in five previous games – at Duke last season and four times this season.
• The St. Louis native is second in the ACC in three-point percentage in league games (.420) and fourth in all games (.411). By comparison, he shot 26.6% from three a year ago.
• Love is shooting 46.8% from three in Carolina's wins and 26.2% in its losses this season.

Not everyone will understand, but those who know our family are very aware of the circumstances and challenges we are facing. As much as I love this University and basketball, being in the middle of a health crisis is where our family is right now and it's where I need to be. After the loss of several very special family members this past year, I came close to losing my dad in December and my grandma is currently in the ICU. With my dad recovering and my grandma fighting for her life, it's not even a question to me where I need to be right now.Â
My family is my world and I will always be there for them. The past few months have quickly changed my perspective on life and I have put this into God's hands and trust His guidance.Times like this bring out the beauty in God's people and I thank all of Tar Heel Nation, my coaches and my teammates for all the love and support. I thank you for lifting us up with your powerful prayers. The University, this team and fans are special. Go Tar Heels."
