The Tar Heels are 20-5 overall and 10-5 in ACC play following a homecourt win on Thursday against No. 3 Louisville. FSU is 14-11 overall (8-7 ACC) and playing its third game this week. The Seminoles have won the first two, at Syracuse on Tuesday and at home against Boston College on Thursday.
Sunday's game is the 50th meeting between UNC and FSU. Carolina leads the series 33-16 but the Seminoles have held the advantage of late, winning the last six in a row. The Tar Heels' last win in Tallahassee was in 2014.
Noting the Tar Heels
• The Tar Heels are fifth in the NET rankings, 23rdd in the coaches' poll and 24th AP poll.
• Sunday's game is a trip home for redshirt junior Ariel "AY" Young, who grew up in Tallahassee and attended Lincoln High School. Her father, Charlton "CY" Young, is an assistant men's basketball coach at FSU. Unfortunately, Young won't play Sunday as she continues to rehab a knee injury sustained in the preseason.
• Sunday will mark the 50th career game for Deja Kelly, Kennedy Todd-Williams and Alyssa Ustby.
• UNC's next win will be coach Courtney Banghart's 50th at UNC.
• The win over Louisville was the first time this season the Tar Heels have trailed at the end of the first quarter and come back to win.
• UNC ranks in the top three in the ACC in scoring (3), scoring defense (3), scoring margin (1), rebounds per game (2), offensive rebounds (2), defensive rebounds (2), field goal percentage defense (1), three-point percentage defense (1), steals (3), rebounding margin (2) and turnover margin (1).
• The Carolina defense has forced all 25 opponents into double-digit turnovers and has forced 20+ 11 times this season, including the most recent home game (22 by Pitt). Opponents are averaging 19.6 turnovers per game vs. UNC.
• All five of UNC's losses this season have come to teams currently ranked in the AP poll, and four of those have been on the road.
• The Tar Heels were one of the final three teams to stand undefeated this season, winning their first 13 games before suffering their first loss in the Jan. 6 game at NC State.
• Carolina has already significantly bettered its 2021-22 wins total. The Tar Heels finished 13-11 last season after making the program's 28th NCAA Tournament appearance.
Trending
• UNC has held four of its last five opponents (and a total of 11 this season) to single-digit scoring in the first quarter. The most recent, Louisville, scored 20.
• Sophomore Alyssa Ustby notched a points-rebounds double-double in four straight games and then had nine and nine against Louisville. Before this streak, she'd never had double-doubles in back-to-back games. She has 11 this season, tied for second in the ACC.
• Although free throw shooting hasn't been a team strength this season – the Tar Heels had a .683 team shooting percentage heading into the Miami game – the past four games have been stellar. UNC was 20 of 21 (95.2 percent) against the Hurricanes, 20-26 (76.9) vs. Pitt, 12-13 (92.3) at Virginia Tech and then 15-20 (75.0) against Louisville. • Deja Kelly is 21-23 from the line over the past five games. For the season she's shooting .856, best in the ACC.
