Carolina Gymnastics Falls to West Virginia on Senior Day

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Carolina gymnastics team fell to West Virginia 196.250-195.225 on Thursday night in Carmichael Arena in the last home meet of 2022. Julia Knower earned her second all-around title in the loss, while Lali Dekanoidze took home the vault title and shared the bars title with teammate Elizabeth Culton.
The Tar Heels opened the meet on vault, a rotation highlighted by a meet-best 9.875 from Dekanoidze. Sophomore Cory Shinohara posted a 9.850, just shy of her career best on the event, and her second straight meet with a 9.850 or better. Carolina earned a 48.950 on the event.
On bars, Culton and Dekanoidze each earned a meet-best 9.875, while Julia Knower rounded out the top three of the meet with a 9.825. The Tar Heels posted a season-best 49.125, going into the halfway point up 98.075-97.700 over the Mountaineers.
Beam proved to be the most challenging part of the meet for the Tar Heels. Senior Emery Summey led off the event with her third 9.825 of the season. In the third spot of the lineup, Hannah Nam put together one of her best routines of the season, posting a 9.850.
In the fourth spot of the lineup, Dekanoidze was putting together another great routine, before falling on her dismount. She was helped off the floor by Carolina staff and unable to compete for the rest of the night.
In a difficult situation, Culton followed with Carolina's highest score of the night, a 9.90.
The Tar Heels finished the meet off on floor, where Julia Knower earned a team-best 9.85 in the last routine of the night. Shailyn St. Brice also posted her second-best score of her career, earning a 9.825.
