Gymnastics Places Second At No. 9 Alabama Tri Meet

TUSCALOOSA, ALA. – The No. 25 Carolina gymnastics team earned a victory over No. 17 Western Michigan on Friday night, but came in second behind host No. 9 Alabama with a team score of 195.325 in the tri meet. The Crimson Tide posted a 197.875 in front of their home crowd at Coleman Coliseum, while the Bronocs earned a 194.875.
Carolina's team score is the highest in program history against Alabama, who they have faced five times, all on the road, since 2000.
The Tar Heels opened the meet on beam, highlighted by a second straight 9.90 from freshman Julia Knower in the anchor spot and a 9.875 from junior all-American Elizabeth Culton.
Knower and junior Bri Greenlow shined on floor for Carolina, each posting a team-best 9.850.
On vault, the Tar Heels struggled to find their landings with no scores over a 9.80. Junior Jay Weil matched her career-best of 9.775 with her handspring front pike, Carolina's top score on the apparatus.
Carolina wrapped the meet up on bars, where Lali Dekanoidze had the team's top mark, a 9.850.
"This was a big environment and we talked about that coming in," head coach Danna Durante said. "And they just weren't intimated. It doesn't matter where they are, they know they have earned the right to be confident. It's just fun to watch. It's a blast to watch this team grow and get better each week."
Up next, the Tar Heels return home for its first dual meet of the season, a Feb. 12 matchup with EAGL conference opponent Temple in Carmichael Arena.
