Gymnastics Earns Conference Victory Over Temple

CHAPEL HILL – The Carolina gymnastics team earned a 195.600-195.425 dual meet victory over the Temple Owls on Saturday night in Carmichael Arena. Freshman Lali Dekanoidze earned her third career all-around title, setting a new career-best of 39.550.
The Tar Heels also took home or shared all four individual event titles. Cory Shinohara, Julia Knower and Dekanoidze each shared the vault title, Dekanoidze took bars with a career-best 9.95, Knower won beam and Elizabeth Culton took a share of floor.
Carolina opened the meet with a season-best 49.125 on vault, highlighted by three 9.875's from Shinohara, Knower and Dekanoidze. Both Shinohara and Knower set new career-bests on the apparatus. The rotation was the second highest on vault in the conference this season.
Despite having to count a fall on bars, Dekanoidze set a new career-best with a 9.95, while freshman Isabelle Shaefer matched her career-best of 9.875. Carolina had a team total of 48.550 on the event.
The Tar Heels, who rank No. 1 in the EAGL on beam, had another consistent performance. Knower scored a 9.90, just shy of her career-high, while Dekanoidze and All-American Elizabeth Culton each earned a 9.875. As a team, Carolina scored a 49.125 on beam, their fourth straight meet with a 49 or better.
The Tar Heels finished the night on floor, where Culton matched her season-best of 9.875. Despite a fall in the middle of the lineup, the Tar Heels were able to hit the other five routines and secure the victory with a 48.750 team score.

The Tar Heels head down the road to Raleigh for a dual meet with NC State on Feb. 19.
