GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina's Deja Kelly has been named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference first team and Alyssa Ustby to the second team, as announced Tuesday by the ACC. Sophomores Kelly and Ustby are the leading scorers for the No. 16 Tar Heels (23-5), who open ACC Tournament play on Friday as the No. 4 seed.
Kelly is one of three players on the 10-member first team who are sophomores or freshmen, joining Louisville sophomore Hailey Van Lith and Notre Dame freshman Olivia Miles. She and Ustby are among only five players in their first two seasons of collegiate basketball who were named to either the first or second teams.
Kelly, a guard from San Antonio, Texas, leaps onto the first team after earning All-Freshman Team honors last season. She was the ACC Player of the Week on Feb. 21 and leads UNC in scoring with 15.8 points. She has been among the conference leaders in scoring all season and currently ranks sixth with 15.8 points per game. She leads the ACC in free throw percentage (.856) and ranks 14th in field goal percentage.
"I'm so happy for Deja to be recognized as one of the league's most consistently impactful players," UNC coach Courtney Banghart said. "Deja has grown in every statistical category from a year ago, on both sides of the ball and on the glass. She loves the game and is committed to the growth process. She has been a critical piece to our success this season."
Ustby, a guard/forward from Rochester, Minn., ranks fourth in the ACC in rebounding with a team-best 8.6 per game, eighth in field goal percentage (.452) and ninth in steals (1.68). She has 12 double-doubles this season, third in the ACC.
"Alyssa's motor is special," Banghart said. "She is relentless on both ends of the floor. She can defend five positions and can score all over the floor. She has made a huge jump in her game since her freshman season – she is a better ballhandler, a better shooter, and a more complete player. Alyssa puts in the work and she was rightly recognized as one of the league's best."
