Pitching Leads The Way In Win Over VMI
March 15, 2022 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL – Shaddon Peavyhouse and Davis Palermo held VMI hitless over the final five innings and struck out eight, while Tomas Frick drove in a pair of runs to lead No. 15 North Carolina to a 5-1 victory over VMI at Boshamer Stadium on Tuesday.
Peavyhouse (2-1) picked up his second win of the season, tossing two scoreless innings and striking out three. Palermo fanned a career-high five batters in three innings of relief to record his first career save. VMI starter Jaxon Lloyd (1-2) took the loss.
The Diamond Heels (15-2) struck first with a run in the third inning when Tomas Frick singled to drive home Vance Honeycutt, who drew a one-out walk and moved up to second on a failed pick off attempt.
VMI (8-8) answered with a run in the top half of the fourth inning, but Carolina countered with a three-run bottom half of the frame with only a single hit.
Hunter Stokely led off the inning with a single and later scored on a bases loaded walk to Angel Zarate. Adam Jewell then balked to bring in Patrick Alvarez and move Zarate and Honeycutt up a base. Frick then followed with an RBI-ground out.
Danny Serretti doubled into the left corner to open the bottom of the fifth and Mac Horvath singled up the middle to bring Serretti home and cap the Diamond Heels' scoring.
Peavyhouse entered in the top of the fifth and after hitting the leadoff batter, retired the next three batters in order. He returned for the sixth inning, struck out two and induced a ground out.
Palermo was brought into pitch in the seventh. He struck out two of the five hitters he faced in the inning, retired the side in order in the eighth and ninth innings.
