GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Duke graduate attack Catriona Barry and North Carolina senior attack Jamie Ortega were named the ACC Co-Offensive Players of the Week, while Duke senior goalie Sophia LeRose and UNC junior defender Emily Nalls were selected the Co-Defensive Players of the Week as the conference announced weekly women's lacrosse honors on Tuesday.
Barry helped Duke to its 11th win this season and fifth-consecutive victory on Saturday at No. 14 Notre Dame (15-12). The native of Napa, California, registered seven points on six goals and an assist. She picked up two ground balls, recorded two caused turnovers and also had a draw control. Her six goals were her second-most this season. Barry has tallied at least one goal in every game this season and now owns 173 career points.
Ortega recorded nine goals and four assists in two wins. A native of Centereach, New York, Ortega tied her season high with nine points (six goals, three assists) in a 23-9 win at High Point on Wednesday. She became the fifth player in NCAA history and second in ACC history to record 400 career points when she scored in the opening minutes. In a 20-8 win Saturday over No. 25 Virginia Tech, Ortega finished with three goals and an assist, moving into third place in NCAA history in career goals with 300. Ortega is just the third player in NCAA history to tally 300 career goals. She finished the week fourth in NCAA history in points (412) and third in goals (300).
Nalls led a strong defensive effort for the Tar Heels in a pair of wins last week. In Wednesday's win at High Point, she tied the UNC school record with 10 ground balls while also controlling nine draws and causing two turnovers. In the Saturday win over Virginia Tech, Nalls gathered two ground balls and four draw controls while causing a turnover.
LeRose was stellar between the pipes in Duke's 15-12 victory at Notre Dame. The native of San Diego collected a season-high 13 saves with a .520 save percentage. She also picked up four ground balls.
Six ACC women's lacrosse teams are ranked in the latest Inside Lacrosse Women/IWLCA poll, with the ACC holding each of the top three spots and seven of the top 25. Following its win at BC, North Carolina is the nation's new No. 1-ranked team this week and is followed by BC (2), Syracuse (4), Duke (7), Notre Dame (15) and Virginia (16). The ACC has the most teams in the poll among all conferences.
