March 8, 2022 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL – North Carolina will put its five-game winning streak on the line Tuesday afternoon as it heads across state lines to take on No. 14 Liberty at Worthington Field in Lynchburg, Va., at 4 p.m.
This will be the first of two meetings between the Heels and Flames, who will make the return trip to Chapel Hill in late April.
After losing its season opener at Florida, the Flames have won 10 in a row and have moved up to as high as No. 14 in the latest collegiate baseball polls. The Diamond Heels' highest ranking this week is No. 15 in the D1 Baseball poll.
UNC is coming off a 4-3 10-inning walk-off victory on Sunday over Coastal Carolina. Eric Grintz bases loaded game-ending single propelled the Diamond Heels to a three-game sweep of the Chanticleers, which also began with a 4-3 walk-off win Friday night.
Sienna transfer Connor Bovair will make his second start of the season on the mound. He made his debut as a starter a week ago against Longwood, tossing 4.2 innings, striking out four and allowing one run. Bovair pitched two hitless innings on Sunday against Coastal Carolina, fanning three.
Liberty swept the two-game series from UNC last season, which included an 8-4 loss in Lynchburg. Carolina leads the all-time series 23-5 with a 3-2 record on the road.
The Flames will start senior right-handed pitch Dylan Cumming. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
