Baseball Shut Out By Liberty, 1-0
March 8, 2022 | Baseball
LYNCHBURG, Va. –North Carolina pounded out nine hits, including two in the ninth that put the tying and go-ahead runs on base, but couldn't push a run across and fell to No. 14 Liberty, 1-0, at Worthington Field on Tuesday.
The loss ended the No. 15 Diamond Heels five-game winning streak and dropped their record to 11-2, while the Flames won their 11th straight to improve to 11-1.
Carolina starter Connor Bovair (1-1) took the loss after surrendering the game's only run in the first inning on a solo home run to Aaron Anderson. Bovair threw two innings and allowed three hits with three strikeouts. Liberty threatened to add to its lead in the second, loading the bases with two outs but Bovair induced a ground ball out to end the threat.
Shaddon Peavyhouse, Shawn Rapp, and Kyle Mott limited the Flames to one hit over the final eight innings, allowing just one hit which was an infield hit in the eighth. Peavyhouse fanned three in 1.2 innings as did Rapp in 2.0 innings. Mott struck out five out nine batters faced in his two innings.
Flames' reliver Mason Fluharty (1-0) earned the win by striking out four 2.1 innings. Cade Hungate gave up two hits in the ninth but struck out three to earn his fourth save of the season.
The Diamond Heels look poised to take an early lead as the first three batters of the game each got a hit, but Vance Honeycutt was caught stealing for the first time after a leadoff knock before Angel Zarate and Tomas Frick laced back-to-back singles. Liberty then turned Carolina away with a 6-3 double play.
UNC put runners in scoring position in the fourth and fifth innings in addition to the first and ninth.
The Diamond Heels return to the field Wednesday, March 8, against Georgetown at Boshamer Stadium starting at 4 p.m. before opening ACC play at home this weekend against Pittsburgh.
