Fourth Men's Golfer to Win Title This Season
Kenan Poole, a junior at the University of North Carolina, shot a 5-under-par 67 in the final round of the Ross Collegiate Classic to earn a share of medalist honors Monday at the Mid Pines Inn and Golf Club in Southern Pines.
Poole finished the 54-hole tournament, which George Mason University hosted, tied with Princeton's William Huang at 6-under 210. Poole made six birdies and an eagle in today's third round to get to 6 under.
Poole birdied four of the first six holes, and eagled the 542-yard, par-5 15th hole to take a one-shot lead. Following a bogey on 16, he reclaimed the lead with a birdie on the 17th before making a bogey on the last hole to fall back into a tie for first place.
The win is Poole's first collegiate title. He is the fourth different Tar Heel to win an individual title this season, the first time UNC has accomplished that since 1995-96. Ryan Gerard (Rod Myers Invitational at Duke), Austin Greaser (Olympia Fields Fighting Illini Invitational) and Dougie Ergood (Elon Phoenix Invitational) previously were individual winners this season.
Carolina sophomore Ryan Smith shot 68-71 over the final 36 holes to tie for 19th at 5-over 221.
