N.C. A&T Fourth Inning Ambush Dooms Heels

CHAPEL HILL – North Carolina A&T scored six runs in the top of the fourth inning and added an insurance run in the seventh to defeat host North Carolina, 7-6, at Boshamer Stadium on Tuesday.
With the loss, the Diamond Heels fall to 21-12 on the season, while the Aggies improved to 12-19.
UNC scored a pair of runs in the third inning on a base hit by junior Angel Zarate, but the Aggies were undeterred.
A walk and two singles led to the Aggies' first run in the fourth inning and an error loaded the bases for Cort Maynard, who worked UNC relief pitcher Shawn Rapp into a full count before hitting a grand slam.
Rapp, who entered the game with runners on first and second with nobody out, retired the next two batters he faced then surrendered consecutive hits as the Aggies capped the inning on an RBI-single from Canyon Brown.
A two-run home run by Danny Serretti and a solo shot from Mac Horvath made it a one-run game after six innings, but N.C. A&T got a run back in the seventh to push their lead to two.
Alberto Osuna hit a two-out solo home run to get the Heels back within a run, but the Diamond Heels were unable to scratch across another run leaving the tying run on base in the bottom of the ninth.
The Aggies used nine pitchers total and Stirling Thomas (1-0) was credited with the win, striking out two in an inning of relief, while UNC starter Shaddon Peavyhouse (3-3) suffered the loss after allowing three runs in 3.0 innings pitched. Peyton Winebarger got the final three outs of the game to earn the save.

• North Carolina suffered its first non-conference home loss of the season, falling to 14-1 against non-ACC foes at Boshamer Stadium in 2022.
•The loss ended the Heels' seven-game winning streak against N.C. A&T and dropped their record to 7-2 all-time against the Aggies.
• Carolina lost for just the second time this season when scoring six or more runs (13-2).
• Osuna hit his fourth home run in as many games and leads the Diamond Heels with 11 home runs on the year.

• Eight of the nine batters in the starting lineup recorded a hit.
• Caden O'Brien matched his season-high for innings pitched with 3.0, while striking out a season-best six batters. It was his most strikeouts in a game since the final game of the shortened 2020 season.

• N.C. A&T answered with six runs in the top of the fourth inning. Xavier Bussey drove in the first run with a single, Cort Maynard hit a grand slam and Canyon Brown singled home another run (A&T 6, UNC 2).
