CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA.—Eight different Tar Heels scored as the No. 1-ranked University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team moved to 14-0 this season with a 17-7 win at No. 15 Virginia on Thursday night at Klockner Stadium
The Tar Heels improved to 14-0 in 2022, including 7-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, solidifying their hold on first place in the conference with one game to play. Virginia fell to 7-8, 2-5. Carolina scored the final five goals of the game in a dominant final 16 minutes.
The Tar Heels posted their 40th consecutive regular season victory, their 18th in a row on the road and their 41st in the last 42 games overall. UNC is 63-6 in its last 69 games against ACC opponents (regular season and postseason).
Jamie Ortega led all players with five points on three goals and two assists for UNC. Ally Mastroianni tied her career high with four goals and added eight draw controls. Tayler Warehime had three goals and an assist, and Caitlyn Wurzburger dished out three assists.
Sam Geiersbach added two goals and an assist off the bench, and Andie Aldave scored twice.
Rachel Clark led the Cavaliers with four goals, but the defense of Emma Trenchard held Clark scoreless in the second half.
Carolina went on a 6-0 run in the first quarter to take control early in the game. UNC led, 7-3, after the first 15 minutes, getting seven goals from seven different players in the opening period.
The Tar Heels hit a dry spell offensively in the middle portion of the game before their defense locked in and held the Cavaliers scoreless for the final 16:08 of action.
Carolina has won 20 of the last 21 meetings with Virginia, including 11 in a row.
Taylor Moreno (14-0) started her 68th career game in goal for UNC and improved to 62-6 in the cage all-time.
The Tar Heels will return to action next Thursday April 21 at home for senior night against Duke in a showdown of two teams at the top of the ACC standings.
