Tar Heels Dominate Pitt, 15-6, To Reach ACC WLAX Semifinal
April 29, 2022 | Women's Lacrosse
NOTRE DAME, IND.—Top-seeded North Carolina dominated possession and eased by eighth-seeded Pitt, 15-6, on Friday afternoon in an Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament quarterfinal at Arlotta Stadium.
Carolina outshot the Panthers, 42-10, won 17 of 25 draw controls and had a season-high 12 caused turnovers as a team. Six Tar Heels scored goals, and eight of UNC's goals were assisted.
Scottie Rose Growney tied her season high with five goals for the second game in a row, recording her third career game with five-plus scores. Sam Geiersbach came off the bench to tally four goals and an assist, and Jamie Ortega had three goals and an assist. Caitlyn Wurzburger scored once and dished out three assists.
The Tar Heels won their 16th consecutive ACC Tournament game (the longest streak in history) and improved to 13-0 all-time in ACC quarterfinal contests.
"It took a little bit to get in the flow of things," Growney said after the game on the ACC Network. "Pitt is a really gritty, tough team and they had a lot of momentum coming into the game. It took a little bit of trial and error, and once we figured out the right positioning for everything, we kind of got into the groove."
Carolina outshot Pitt, 24-11, in the first half, but Panther goalie Paulina DiFatta had 14 first-half saves to hold UNC to just eight goals. DiFatta, who had an ACC Tournament single-game-record 19 goals in Wednesday's first-round win over Louisville, tied the record for most saves in an entire ACC Tournament by halftime of the game against the Tar Heels.
UNC goalie Taylor Moreno had previously held the record of 33 (set in 2018 in three games). On Friday, Moreno was strong once again in going the distance in cage, making eight saves.
A smothering UNC defense held Pitt without a shot attempt for over nine minutes in the third quarter and scoreless for over 21 second-half minutes. Nine different Tar Heels caused turnovers, led by three by Julia Dorsey and two from Ally Mastroianni, who also added an assist and seven draw controls.
The Tar Heels advance and will play either fourth-seeded Duke or fifth-seeded Notre Dame at 1 p.m. on Sunday in the ACC semifinals at Notre Dame.
