CHAPEL HILL—University of North Carolina women's lacrosse players Ally Mastroianni and Jamie Ortega are both among the five finalists for the 2022 Tewaaraton Award, the Tewaaraton Foundation announced on Thursday. The award is the highest individual honor in college lacrosse and is presented annually to the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States.
This is the second year in a row and the second time overall the Tar Heels have had two Tewaaraton finalists in the same season (Ortega and Taylor Moreno were finalists in 2021). Ortega joins Marie McCool as the only two-time Tewaaraton finalists in Tar Heel history.
Mastroianni and Ortega are the 10th and 11th Tewaaraton finalists in Carolina women's lacrosse history: Christine McPike (2002), Amber Falcone (2009), Jen Russell (2010), Becky Lynch (2012), Kara Cannizzaro (2013), Marie McCool (2017, 2018), Taylor Moreno (2021), Ortega (2021, 2022) and Mastroianni (2022).
On the women's side, 2021 Tewaaraton Trophy winner Charlotte North (Boston College) returns as a finalist after earning first-team All-ACC honors this season. Ortega (North Carolina), who picked up ACC Attacker of the Year honors this year, was also a finalist in 2021. Mastroianni was the ACC Midfielder of the Year each of the last two years, while Syracuse's Meaghan Tyrrell was first-team All-ACC, and Maryland's Aurora Cordingley was the Big Ten Attacker of the Year.Â
The men's and women's Tewaaraton recipients will be chosen at the conclusion of the 2022 college lacrosse season by selection committees comprised of premier college coaches who are appointed annually by the Tewaaraton Foundation.
"We are incredibly proud of these talented student-athletes," said Tewaaraton Foundation President Andy Phillips. "They've given us record-setting performances and have distinguished themselves as the best in college lacrosse. It's with great excitement that we look forward to hosting them when the Tewaaraton Ceremony returns to the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian on June 2."
