Top-Seeded WLAX Blasts Cavs, 24-2, In NCAA 2nd Round

CHAPEL HILL— Top-seeded North Carolina got goals from 14 different players and dominated Virginia, 24-2, in the women's lacrosse NCAA Tournament second round on Sunday afternoon at Dorrance Field.
The 24 goals are a school record for most in an NCAA Tournament game and tie the overall program record for any game. The 22-goal margin of victory also ties the overall UNC program record, set versus Longwood in 2007.
Jamie Ortega had four goals and two assists for Carolina, with Caitlyn Wurzburger contributing a goal and a career-high six assists. Ally Mastroianni (three goals, one assist, five draw controls), Scottie Rose Growney (three goals, one assist) and Andie Aldave (three goals) all had hat tricks.
With the victory, Carolina advances to host an NCAA quarterfinal game on Thursday May 19 at Dorrance Field against Stony Brook, which beat Rutgers on Sunday. The Tar Heels are seeking their 10th trip to the NCAA semifinals in the last 13 years and their fourth in a row.
Carolina will be making its 17th consecutive appearance in the NCAA quarterfinals. The Tar Heels have won nine of their last 12 quarterfinal games.
UNC beat Virginia for the 12th consecutive time and the 21st time in the last 22 meetings in the series.
The Tar Heels held the Cavaliers scoreless in the second half and outscored the Cavs, 11-0, after halftime. Carolina connected on 24 of 37 shot attempts in the game for a blistering team shooting percentage of .649.
Taylor Moreno (19-0) started in goal and made five saves in 47:48 of action to pick up the win in the cage, improving to 67-6 in her career.
UNC is 68-6 in its last 74 games against ACC opponents (regular season and postseason). The Tar Heels improved to 28-3 at home in the NCAA Tournament and won their 19th consecutive NCAA second-round game.
The NCAA will announce gametimes for Thursday's NCAA quarterfinal games on Sunday evening.
