Carolina Dominates Day Two Of NCAA Singles & Doubles
May 24, 2022 | Women's Tennis
CHAMPAIGN, Illinois - North Carolina put on a show Tuesday at the 2022 Division I NCAA Women's Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships. Fiona Crawley, Elizabeth Scotty and Carson Tanguilig all wrapped up straight-set singles victories within 90 seconds of each other in the morning, while UNC's doubles teams of Cameron Morra and Tanguilig, and Crawley and Scotty posted victories in the evening session to make it a perfect day for the Tar Heels from the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex at the University of Illinois.
By virtue of reaching the Round of 16, North Carolina's singles trio earns ITA All-America honors for the 2021-22 season. Tanguilig becomes the 23rd players named an All-America under the leadership of Tar Heel head coach Brian Kalbas in 19 illustrious seasons in Chapel Hill. Meanwhile, Crawley and Scotty are just the 12th and 13th players in program history to earn All-America status in both singles and doubles.
No. 55 Crawley took down Texas A&M's No. 24 Tatiana Makarova, 6-2, 6-4 in her second round bout, while No. 30 Scotty earned a very impressive win over No. 11 Jaeda Daniel of NC State, 6-1, 6-3.
No. 51 Tanguilig finished moments later by topping Mississippi's No. 42 Sabina Machalova, 6-4, 6-1, to make it a clean sweep for the Tar Heels.
Crawley's 45 singles victories are the fourth most in UNC history. The only two players to record more wins in a single season are Hayley Carter, the ACC's all-time victory leader, and 2015 NCAA Singles Champion Jamie Loeb.
Tanguilig continues to add to her resume as the top freshman in the ACC. She is now 31-7 overall in her rookie campaign and 7-1 against ranked players.
Scotty improves to 21-4 in her junior season with 13 wins coming against ranked opponents.Â
The evening session got the doubles draw underway.Â
No. 39 Morra and Tanguilig were added to the 32-team field as alternates and took on Rice's No. 22 ranked team of Diae El Jardi and Maria Budin. The Tar Heel tandem scooped up the opening set 6-1, dropped the second set 7-5, but prevailed in a third set super breaker 10-6.
The duo had not played together for nearly three months, yet improved to 20-5 on the season.Â
No. 2 seed Crawley and Scotty were the last match of the day and took the court about nine hours after completing their morning singles matches. The long break didn't slow Carolina down as they secured the opening set, 7-5. Crawley and Scotty coughed up a lead in the second set, but rallied by winning the first three points of the third set super breaker, increased the lead to 8-3 before hanging on for the 11-9 win.
Round of 16 singles and doubles action continues on Wednesday.
