Three More Tar Heels Earn Tickets to Oregon
May 26, 2022 | Track & Field
BLOOMINGTON, IND. – Three more Tar Heels earned tickets to the NCAA Track & Field Championships with standout performances on Thursday as the North Carolina track and field team continued competition at the NCAA East Preliminary Round, hosted by Indiana. On the first day of women's competition in the four-day event, Jill Shippee and Madison Wiltrout both picked up event wins and Anna Keefer also earned a ticket to the finals.
Competing at the Hoosiers' Haught Track & Field Complex , Shippee qualified in a big way, resetting the school and Atlantic Coast Conference records she already owned in the hammer throw. Her distance of 70.07m (229-10) is tied for 17th longest on the NCAA's all-time list.
Wiltrout also qualified with a W, besting the field in the women's javelin with a distance of 182-11 (55.75m).
In the women's long jump, Anna Keefer placed ninth in a field of 48 with a distance of 20-4.5. The spot was enough to earn her a ticket to Eugene, with the top 12 finishers advancing. The long jump wasn't even Keefer's headline of the day, though – she set a school record in the 200 meters with a time of 22.83 to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals in that event.
In the women's 1,500 meters, both Carlee Hansen (seventh in 4:14.58) and Taryn Parks (19th in 4:17.23) registered PRs and advanced to Saturday's quarterfinals.
Action continues on Friday, with the first UNC competitor Jesse Hunt in the men's 1,500M quarterfinals at 5:15 p.m. To see the full schedule and follow live results, click here.
