Six Tar Heels Named To All-ACC Academic Team For Outdoor T&F
June 24, 2022 | Track & Field, Academics
Six Tar Heels have earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic honors for outdoor track & field, as announced by the ACC on Friday.
Anna Keefer, Sasha Neglia, Sarah Trainor and Madison Wiltrout were named to the women's team, and Patrick Anderson and Isaiah Palmer were named to the men's team.
The award takes into account both academic and athletic performance during the 2022 season.
Keefer, a communication studies major from St. Michael Albertville, Minn., advanced to the NCAA Championships in the long jump and placed 10th to claim second-team All-America honors. She was the ACC runner-up in that event to earn first-team All-Conference honors. She earned second-team All-ACC honors in the 100m and 200m and set program records in both events during the course of the season.
Neglia, a statistics & analytics major from Kingsport, Tenn., earned honorable mention All-America honors after placing 20th in the women's 3000m steeplechase at NCAA Championships. She earned second-team All-ACC honors in that event after placing fourth.
Trainor, an environmental sciences major from Poughkeepsie, N.Y., earned ACC Track Performer of the Week honors during the season after claiming the Duke Invitational title in the women's steeplechase in early April.
Wiltrout, an exercise and sport science major from Connellsville, Pa., won bronze in the javelin at NCAA Championships. She won the 2022 ACC title in that event and holds the program and conference records.
Anderson, an environmental studies major from Pittsburgh, Pa., earned second-team All-ACC honors after finishing fourth in the men's 10,000 meters.
Palmer, a psychology major from Plano, Texas, earned second-team All-ACC honors with a fourth-place finish in the men's 400 meters.
Louisville pole vaulter Gabriela Leon was named the ACC Women's Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while Florida State hurdler Trey Cunningham and Notre Dame distance runner Dylan Jacobs are the ACC Men's Co-Scholar Athletes of the Year. All won NCAA titles in 2022 and were named Region Athletes of the Year by the USTFCCCA.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September of 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their careers, as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
