Mastroianni & Ortega Finalists For Honda Award For Lacrosse

CHAPEL HILL—Teammates Ally Mastroianni and Jamie Ortega of the University of North Carolina, Boston College's Charlotte North and Emily Sterling from the University of Maryland are the four finalists for the Class of 2022 Honda Sport Award for Lacrosse as announced by Chris Voelz, Executive Director of The Collegiate Women Sports Awards (CWSA) today.Â
The Honda Sport Award has been presented annually by the CWSA for the past 46 years to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA- sanctioned sports and signifies "the best of the best in collegiate athletics". The winner of the sport award becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2022 Honda Cup which will be presented during the live telecast of the Collegiate Women Sports Awards Presented by Honda on CBS Sports Network on June 27
The lacrosse finalists were selected by a panel of coaches and experts from the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). The Honda Sport award winner for lacrosse will be announced later this week after voting by administrators from over 1,000 NCAA member schools. Each NCAA member institution has a vote. Â
Mastroianni, a graduate student from Martinsville, N.J., was named a 2022 Tewaaraton Award Finalist and the IWLCA Midfielder of the Year. The midfielder is a two-time First Team All-American and set career-high marks this year in goals (48), points (57) and draw controls (136). She was recently drafted eighth overall in the 2022 Athletics Unlimited Lacrosse College Draft.
Ortega was named the ACC Attacker of the Year for the second straight year and is a two-time Tewaaraton Award finalist. The senior from Cenereach, N.Y., is a four-time All-American and UNC's leader in goals (69), assists (44) and points (113). Her points and assists ranked sixth and seventh nationally, respectively. Overall, she finished her career first in ACC history and second in NCAA history with 466 career points.

The CWSA, entering its 46th year, has honored the nation's top NCAA women athletes for their superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service.  Since commencing its partnership in 1986, Honda has provided more than $3.4 million in institutional grants to the universities of the award winners and nominees to support women's athletics programs. Â
