Ryan Gerard A Second-Team Honoree
For the second time in University of North Carolina men's golf history the Golf Coaches Association of America bestowed 2022 All-America honors on four Tar Heel players.
The GCAA selected fifth-senior Ryan Gerard of Raleigh, N.C., to the second team and senior Ryan Burnett of Lafayette, Calif., freshman David Ford of Peachtree Corners, Ga., and junior Austin Greaser of Vandalia, Ohio, earned honorable mention honors.
Carolina is one of five teams with four PING All-Americas this season along with national champion Texas, Arizona State, Oklahoma and Vanderbilt.
This is the first time four Tar Heels earned All-America honors since 1991 when Pat Moore was a second-teamer and John Aber, Tee Burton and Tom Scherrer were honorable mention selections.
Gerard led UNC with a scoring average of 70.35, the third best in Tar Heel single-season history. He won the Rod Meyers Invitational, finished second at the NCAA Yale Regional, tied for seventh at the ACC Championship and 25th at the NCAA Championship, where the Tar Heels tied for first in stroke play and advanced to the quarterfinals of match play.
Gerard finished his five-year college career with the fourth-best stroke average (71.65) in UNC history. On Monday, he qualified for next week's U.S. Open by winning a share of medalist honors in Jupiter, Fla.
Burnett tied for first in stroke play in the 2022 NCAA Championship. He was one of four players to finish 72 holes of stroke play at even par. Third all-time in UNC history in scoring (71.54), Burnett finished in the top 10 in three of UNC's last five tournaments this season, including a tie for 10th at the ACC Championship, where the Tar Heels won the stroke play portion of that tournament.
Ford was ACC Freshman of the Year, a member of the GCAA's All-Freshman team and earned All-ACC honors with Gerard and Greaser. Ford tied for fifth at the NCAA Championship and seventh at the ACC Championship, two of his six top-10 performances this season. He averaged 70.54, the second lowest ever by a Tar Heel freshman and the fourth best overall in UNC single-season-history. He also won both of his matches in the ACC semifinals vs. Wake Forest and NCAA quarterfinals vs. Pepperdine.
Greaser is a GCAA honorable mention All-America for the second consecutive season. He was one of three Tar Heels – with Gerard and Ford – to shoot under par for the season, and led the Tar Heels with two individual victories. The 2021 U.S. Amateur runner-up won the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational and the NCAA Yale Regional. He finished in the top 10 five times, tied for 25th at the NCAA Championship, won his NCAA quarterfinal round match over Pepperdine All-America William Mouw and averaged 70.85, the fifth best in UNC history.
Greaser also will be playing in the 2022 U.S. Open in Brookline, Mass., which begins June 16.
