BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A pair of University of North Carolina players, Brooklyn Walker-Welch and Caitlyn Wurzburger, will compete in the World Lacrosse Sixes semifinals on July 15 at The World Games in Birmingham, Alabama.Â
The women's tournament, which takes place July 12-16, includes 18 total games with teams split into two groups for round-robin preliminary play. Now that the preliminary round has concluded, the top two teams from Group A and Group B have advanced to the semifinals.
Leading Group A is the United States, which handily defeated the Czech Republic on Thursday evening with a final score of 25-6. Wurzburger had one goal and three assists in the contests, also recording two ground balls. The U.S. will now face Great Britain on Friday at 3 p.m. ET in the first semifinal game of the day.Â
Canada paves the way for Group B following a 10-7 victory over Haudenosaunee with Walker-Welch impressing in the win with two goals, one ground ball and one draw control. Canada will now prepare for a tilt with Australia tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. for the second semifinal game.
Israel and Sammy Jo Tracy ('17) dropped a narrow 14-12 decision to Great Britain, just missing out on a spot in tomorrow's semifinal. Tracy had a game-high four goals in addition to one ground ball and one draw control. Israel will now play Japan for fifth place on Friday at 1 p.m.
World Lacrosse Sixes is being contested for the first time in the history of The World Games, which was postponed from 2021 due to the pandemic. Sixes, a shorter and faster-paced version of lacrosse, is played on a 70Ă—36-meter outdoor field and involves 8-minute, running-time quarters. All games are played at PNC Field on the campus of the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Israel's game tomorrow vs. Japan will broadcast on the Olympic Channel. Both semifinal contests will be distributed by the World Games via its 24/7 channel at Olympics.com as well as select international broadcast partners, while CBS Sports Network will air a daily highlights package in the U.S.
