July 6, 2022 | Women's Lacrosse
TOWSON, Md. – The quest for gold continues for the United States, which has advanced to the semifinals of the 2022 World Lacrosse Women's World Championship following its 18-3 win over Japan on Wednesday night in Towson, Maryland.
Top-seeded Team USA is set to square off with No. 4 Australia on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET. The U.S. topped Australia, 16-5, on July 2 during Pool A play.Â
North Carolina players have impressed throughout the championship, and tonight was no exception. Marie McCool ('18) had two goals, one assist and three draw controls, bringing her six-game total to 17 goals, three assists and 14 draw controls. She was named the player of the match, joining Ally Mastroianni ('21) and Emily Parros ('13) who have also earned the distinction.Â
"It was such a fun game," said McCool. "We always love playing Japan. They're so skilled and we learn a lot from them. We had a lot of fun out there and we're just really excited for another opportunity to compete tomorrow."
For the second game in a row, Mastroianni had a game-high seven draw controls, also tallying a goal and an assist. Molly Hendrick ('17) added a goal of her own.
The U.S. enters tomorrow's semifinal contest undefeated through the first six games under head coach Jenny Levy. Collectively, Team USA has scored 106 goals, only allowing 29 from its opponents. Its first shutout since 2005 came in a dominant 21-0 performance against Hong Kong in the Round of 16.
Seeking its fourth-straight title, the U.S. has been the most dominant team in women's world lacrosse championship history since the event was first held in 1982. Team USA has won eight of 10 titles, bringing home the gold medal in 1982, 1989, 1993, 1997, 2001, 2009, 2013 and 2017. The only times the U.S. failed to win the championship were 1986 and 2005, finishing as the runner-up to Australia on both occasions.
Current UNC players Emily Nalls and Brooklyn Walker-Welch will meet one another on the back line in tomorrow's England vs. Canada semifinal game at 9 p.m. following the USA's tilt with Australia.Â
Nalls, a rising senior defender, had a game-high-tying four draw controls in England's 13-5 victory over Israel in the quarterfinals. Canada, which rising sophomore defender Walker-Welch is representing, handed the Czech Republic a 15-7 loss to earn a semifinal berth.
