August 15, 2022 | Women's Lacrosse
SPARKS, MD. – Less than three months after helping the University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team capture its third national title in program history, Taylor Moreno earned another title of her own: 2022 Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse Champion.
The former Tar Heel standout started her professional lacrosse debut on top and never looked back, holding the No. 1 spot on the leaderboard all four weeks of play during season two at USA Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, Maryland. She capped off her rookie campaign with 1798 points, 16 points ahead of runner-up Sam Apuzzo (1782).   Â
Moreno's 241 points on July 24 were the most in a single game in league history. During week three, she found herself in the AU record book once again after setting a new mark for most saves in a season. Moreno concluded the year with 131 saves – besting the previous record by 31 – and had a .560 save percentage, 692 stat points and 11 double-digit save performances.
Also making a statement in her first year as a professional was Ally Mastroianni, the 2022 Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association National Midfielder of the Year. She finished third after accumulating 1,399 points from 19 goals, 10 assists, 40 draw controls, 20 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers.
Emma Trenchard, the IWLCA National Defender of the Year, was yet another national champion All-America Tar Heel who impressed in the professional rankings. She landed on the AU All-Defensive Team and was a finalist for the GEICO Defensive Player of the Year.
Including Moreno, Mastroianni and Trenchard, a total of 15 Tar Heel alumnae took part in the league: Andie Aldave, Kristen Carr, Sam Geiersbach, Scottie Rose Growney, Marie McCool, Amber Falcone McKenzie, Kerrigan Miller, Jamie Ortega, Sammy Jo Tracy, Caroline Wakefield, Caylee Waters and Kayla Wood. Aldave was added prior to the final week of play.
During the four-week season, the top four players in the 56-athlete league became captains each week and drafted their teams from scratch for the following week's games. Moreno was named team captain all three weeks. Based on the scoring system, all players could win or lose points during every game and athletes scored points as individuals and as a team to win MVP titles and cash bonuses.Â
