WBB Hosts NC State Sunday In Triangle Battle

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina hosts NC State Sunday afternoon at Carmichael Arena in a matchup of ranked Atlantic Coast Conference women's basketball teams. Tipoff is 3:30 p.m. and the game will air on ESPN.
The No. 22 Tar Heels are 11-5 overall and 2-3 in ACC play. No. 11 NC State is 13-4 (3-3).

The teams are meeting for the 116th time overall and the first time this season. They'll face off again on Feb. 26 in Raleigh. NC State leads the series 62-53 and has won the last three matchups.
The Tar Heels are coming off back-to-back ACC wins after dropping their first three. After beating No. 4 Notre Dame at home last Sunday, Carolina mounted a fourth-quarter comeback, to win 70-59 at Virginia on Thursday night.
Sunday's game is UNC's seventh of the season against a ranked team. Carolina is 3-3 vs. ranked teams with two wins over top-five teams.
In addition to the enthusiasm surrounding the Triangle rivalry, Carolina is celebrating Alumni Weekend and will welcome will approximately 70 alums and their families to the game on Sunday.
Noting the Tar Heels
• Three Tar Heels rank in the conference's top 11 in scoring: Deja Kelly is fifth with 16.6 ppg, Kennedy Todd-Williams is 10th at 13.9, and Alyssa Ustby is 11th at 13.8. No other school has more than two scores in the top 15.
• In ACC games, UNC is third in scoring defense, allowing 63.4 points per game, and second in FG percentage defense at .348.

• Six Tar Heels have led the team in scoring or tied for the lead in at least one game this season. Most recently, freshman Paulina Paris came off the bench to lead UNC with 16 points vs. Notre Dame.
• Alyssa Ustby ranks in the ACC's top 25 in scoring (11th), rebounding (5th), field goal percentage (4th), blocks (10th) and steals (16th). She tied her career best with three blocks against Notre Dame, all in the first quarter, then equaled that again at Virginia.
• Eva Hodgson hasn't missed a free throw since the Iowa State game in Portland in November. She's 11-11 since then but hasn't been to the line since she went 3-3 at Miami on Jan. 5. With a career average of .883 from the foul line, she's fourth among all active DI players.
• UNC's 10 blocks against Iowa State were the most for a Tar Heel team since the 2017-18 season. The Tar Heels had eight at Virginia on Thursday and are averaging 4.9 per game, fifth in the ACC and 26th nationally.
• Destiny Adams is tied for eighth in the ACC in blocks with 1.38 per game in an average of 17 minutes per game on the court.
• Two Tar Heels are in the top seven in the ACC in assist/turnover ratio. Eva Hodgson is sixth at 2.1 and Deja Kelly is seventh at 2.0. UNC's team assist-turnover ratio of 1.11 is third in the ACC.
• UNC finished nonconference play shooting .658 from the foul line but has improved considerably in conference play. The Tar Heels are shooting .750 over their five conference games with only one game (Miami at .615) below .700. For the season, UNC is shooting .682, 12th in the league. Carolina's ACC-only average ranks seventh.
• Carolina didn't take a free throw until the fourth quarter of the win over Notre Dame but finished 11-14 (.786) from the line.

• On Jan. 5 at Miami, Deja Kelly became the 39th player in Carolina history to score 1,000 career points at UNC. She hit the milestone in her 69th game as a Tar Heel with a career scoring average of 14.5 points per game. This year she's averaging a team-best 16.6 ppg.
• Following two comeback wins in Portland in November, UNC was recognized as the Team of the Week by NCAA.com. PKI MVP Deja Kelly was named ACC Player of the Week.
• Eva Hodgson ranks fourth among all active DI players in career free throw percentage, hitting 88.3 of her foul shots in her fourth season of collegiate play. She's 15th in career three-point percentage at 40.7.
• With 11 free throws in the game against Michigan, Deja Kelly passed 250 makes for her career, which is the minimum for inclusion on the NCAA's career leaders list. With a career free throw percentage of 80.3, she ranks 35th among all DI players.
• Although there are three seniors on this year's team, forward Malu Tshitenge is the only fourth-year UNC player. She's the sole Tar Heel who was part of coach Courtney Banghart's first squad. Tshitenge, Ariel Young and Eva Hodgson all will be honored in Senior Day ceremonies following UNC's final home game of the season on Feb. 23 against Virginia Tech.
