Bacot, Davis Lead 72-64 Win Over BC
January 17, 2023 | Men's Basketball
by Matt Bowers
CHAPEL HILL, N.C.— Armando Bacot tied the University of North Carolina program record with his 60th career double-double as North Carolina beat Boston College, 72-64, on Tuesday night in the Smith Center. RJ Davis added 18 points, 15 of which came in the second half.
Bacot had 20 points and 16 rebounds to tie Hall of Famer Billy Cunningham for the UNC double-double record set nearly six decades ago. Bacot had his double-double before halftime, and it was his school-record 67th career double-figure rebounding effort.
He is tied for eighth in Atlantic Coast Conference history in double-doubles. He has 1,203 career rebounds and needs just 17 more to break Tyler Hansbrough's Carolina career record of 1,219 boards.
"He's just not a normal player," UNC head coach Hubert Davis said of Bacot. "It's hard to describe just how valuable and how great he is as as a player, as someone to coach. You know, one of the things as a coaches that you really, really want is when you go to practice and you go to games, you want consistency...With Armando [Bacot], there's no guesswork. You know exactly what you're gonna get every practice every game and what he's doing, statistically, is just unbelievable."
With the victory, Carolina improved to 13-6 overall this season, 5-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. BC fell to 8-11, 2-6 with its fourth consecutive loss. The Tar Heels have won 15 of the last 16 meetings between the two schools and improved to 9-0 at home in 2022-23.
Both teams shot under 40 percent from the floor in an ugly first half, but the Tar Heels had a 10-4 edge in offensive rebounds and a 10-2 advantage in second-chance points in the opening 20 minutes.
Davis hit a pair of three-pointers in the first four minutes after the break to set the tone for his strong second half. BC never led in the game but pulled within a point at 56-55 with under five minutes remaining.
The Tar Heels closed the game on a 16-9 run from that point.
"There was a stretch where we were maybe up one and we were able to really key in on defense and that kind of led to our offense," said RJ Davis. "I feel like once we were disciplined, and we're good enough to do that, we've got to do it all the time from start to finish."
Graduate student forward Pete Nance returned to the starting lineup for UNC after missing the last three games with a strained back and tallied six points and five rebounds in over 30 minutes of playing time. Freshman big man Jalen Washington rolled his right ankle in shootaround on Tuesday afternoon prior to the game and did not play against the Eagles.
The Tar Heels will return to action on Saturday afternoon at home against NC State.
