CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The North Carolina women's basketball team fell 62-58 on Thursday evening at Miami. After trailing through most of the game, the visitors closed the gap to one with 49 seconds to play, but the Hurricanes scored the last three points of the game to hold onto the win.
With their fourth consecutive loss, the No. 22 Tar Heels are now 9-5 overall and 0-3 in ACC play. They're back in action on Sunday, hosting No. 4 Notre Dame at Carmichael Arena at 4 p.m.
Junior Deja Kelly played all 40 minutes and scored 19 points to lead Carolina. In the fourth quarter she surpassed the 1,000 career points milestone, finishing the game with 1,006 points. Kennedy Todd-Williams scored 13 pints and Alyssa Ustby added 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Haley Cavinder led Miami with 16 points and Jasmyne Roberts added 10 points and nine rebounds as the Hurricanes won the rebounding battle 35-31.
Although Miami led for almost 37 minutes of the game, the margin was never more than 10. After the home team went up by double digits on a three by Hanna Cavinder midway through the second quarter, the Tar Heels responded with an 11-0 run. Freshman Paulina Paris hit back-to-back threes in that span then Eva Hodgson added a trey of her own to make it 26-25 Tar Heels with 2:59 to play before halftime.
Miami led by two, 32-30, at the break.
The Tar Heels managed just nine points in the third quarter, shooting 3-15 and missing 12 shots in a row to fall behind again. The Hurricanes led 46-39 heading into the fourth.
UNC was down by six with 1:28 to play before a four-point play by Kelly shrank the margin to two. Ustby hit a free throw with 49 seconds remaining to make it one, but the Tar Heels didn't score again and had to foul, sending Miami to the line to hit three free throws down the stretch.
Carolina's 58-point total was a season low. The Tar Heels also had season lows for field goals (21) and blocks (1). UNC's .350 shooting percentage was the team's second-lowest of the season.
