VB Squeezes Out Sweep Against Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Carolina volleyball team (8-8, 2-5 ACC) tallied its fifth sweep of the season on the road Friday night, downing Syracuse (2-15, 0-7 ACC) in straight sets in the Women's Building. The victory is the Tar Heels' first road conference win of the season.

Junior outside hitter Mabrey Shaffmaster led the match with 17 kills with a .325 hitting clip, while freshman outside hitter Safi Hampton contributed 12 kills and pair of aces.Â

The Tar Heels out-hit the Orange .226-.191 and won the service line battle with eight aces to five, led by junior defensive specialist Carson Overbeck, who set a new career-best with four aces. Carolina is now 7-1 when hitting above .200 this season.

Defensively, sophomore libero Maddy May led the Tar Heels with 11 digs, followed by Shaffmaster, who had nine digs, just one dig shy of having a double-double in the match.Â

Sophomore setter Anita Babic and freshman setter Zoe Behrendt quarterbacked the offense with 18 and 14 assists, respectively.Â

Up next, the Tar Heels head to Chestnut Hill for a 1 p.m. battle at Boston College on Sunday.Â
