CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina wraps up its season-opening four-game homestand on Saturday with a visit from the Elon Phoenix and Tar Heel legend Charlotte Smith.

The No. 17 Tar Heels are 3-0 on the season after a 62-32 win over Hampton on Wednesday. Elon is 1-2 coming off a loss at NC State on Wednesday.

A UNC alum and former Tar Heel assistant coach, Smith is one of the most decorated players in program history and hit the game-winner in the 1994 NCAA championship game. Her retired No. 23 jersey hangs in the Carmichael rafters.

The game is Student Appreciation Day, with giveaways throughout the game.

Heels vs. Phoenix
Saturday's game is the 13th meeting between UNC and Elon. The Tar Heels have won 11 of the previous 12 meetings, with Elon's win coming during the 1974-75 season. That's the only time the two have met twice in the same season.
The 1974-75 season was UNC's first as a varsity program under the umbrella of the Department of Athletics.
• The most recent meeting came in the fourth game of UNC coach Courtney Banghart's time at Carolina. On Nov. 22, 2019, at Carmichael, the Tar Heels won, 76-46, to improve to 4-0 on the year.

Elon comes to Chapel Hill 1-2 overall following a 90-35 loss at NC State on Wednesday. The Phoenix also has a loss at East Carolina and a win over Gardner-Webb thus far in the season.
• The teams have a common opponent so far in Gardner-Webb, which Carolina beat 102-49 at home on Nov. 8 to open the season and Elon beat 90-69 on the road last Saturday.
• Maraja Pass leads Elon in scoring with 8.0 points per game and Ruby Willard is right behind her at 7.7. Ava Leroux and Regina Walton pace the team in rebounding, averaging 3.7 each.
• In addition head coach Charlotte Smith (UNC, 1999), assistant coaches Josh Wick (2001) and Edgar Farmer, Jr. (1994) are both Carolina graduates.
