Distance Runners Start 2023-24 Season In Boston
December 2, 2023 | Track & Field
BOSTON—Distance runners from the University of North Carolina competed on Saturday in the team's first meet of 2023-24 at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener hosted by Boston University.
The meet was highlighted by junior Parker Wolfe smashing his old school record of 13:19.73, set at this same event last year, with a new record of 13:13.61. This time ranks him as the eighth collegian of all time in the indoor 5,000-meter. Harvard's Graham Blanks finished first in the Men's 5,000-meter and set an NCAA record with a time of 13:03.78.
On the women's side, Taryn Parks was Carolina's lone competitor in the 3,000-meter. She finished 50th with a time of 9:34.21.Â
Fatima Alanis and Eva Klingbeil both represented the Tar Heels in the women's 5,000 meters and finished in the top third of participants. Alanis finished with a time of 16:14.81, while Klingbeil finished just behind her in 72nd place with a time of 16:21.50. Alanis now holds the third-fastest time in school history, and Klingbeil enters the top ten, taking Alanis' former spot at eighth.
The 3,000-meter and 5,000-meter runs on the men's and women's sides featured some of the best distance runners in the NCAA, including many top finishers from last month's NCAA Cross Country Championships and last year's NCAA Track and Field Championships.
Â
The Tar Heels will return to action on January 12th in Blacksburg, Va., at the Virginia Tech Invitational.
