Forbes Named EAGL Co-Rookie Of The Week
February 1, 2023 | Women's Gymnastics
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – University of North Carolina gymnast Kaya Forbes has been named the East Atlantic Gymnastics League Co-Rookie of the Week, the first weekly accolade of the freshman's career. She shares the honor with Towson's Isabella Minervini.
Forbes claimed her first-ever outright event win in a tri-meet with UW Stout and Yale on Jan. 23 after posting a 9.875 on floor, also tying for first on vault (9.825). She then earned a pair of second-place finishes on vault and floor in UNC's win over George Washington just five days later. Her score of 9.850 on vault was the highest among the Tar Heels while her 9.900 set a new career best.
A native of Gonzales, Louisiana, Forbes has yet to score lower than 9.800 on any event during her collegiate career. Five of her eight routines across UNC's four meets have been 9.850+ and she has placed in the top-2 on vault in each of the last three contests.
Additionally, she is one of only four freshmen in the EAGL to have recorded at least one mark of 9.900 this season.
Forbes' award marks the third weekly honor for Carolina this season as Lali Dekanoidze and Julia Knower were named the EAGL Specialist of the Week and Gymnast of the Week, respectively, on Jan. 18.
The Tar Heels are back in action Saturday with a trip to Raleigh for a tri-meet with NC State and Western Michigan at 4 p.m. ET inside the James T. Valvano Arena at William Neal Reynolds Coliseum.
