Men's Lacrosse Downs Mercer In Season Opener

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Behind 16 different goal scorers and 10 saves from goalkeeper Collin Krieg, the North Carolina men's lacrosse team (1-0) defeated Mercer (0-2) 25-3, Friday night at Dorrance Field.

How It Happened
- Lance Tillman, Logan McGovern and Antonio DeMarco found the back of the net in the opening period, as Carolina held a 3-0 lead after the first.
- UNC scored the first 11 goals of the second period, however Mercer found the score column for the first time with 3:39 remaining in the half.
- The Tar Heels closed the opening 30 minutes with back-to-back goals from James Matan and Dewey Egan, entering the halftime break ahead, 16-1.
- Coming out of the half, the two teams traded two goals apiece, as UNC finished the third with two-straight goals to lead 20-3 entering the fourth.
- North Carolina capped off the game with five fourth quarter goals, defeating the Bears 25-3.
- McGovern led the Tar Heels offensively with six points (four goals, two assists) in his UNC debut.
- Tillman, Henry Schertzinger, DeMarco, Dewey Egan, Matan and Ryan Levy each found the back of the net twice.
- Johnny Schwarz, Andrew Tyeryar, Sean Goldsmith, Trevor Deubner, Caden Whaling, Leif Hagerup, Connor Maher, Ryan O'Leary and Collin Loughead each scored one time.
- Tyeryar, Maher and Krieg each finished with four groundballs.
- Tyeryar finished the game 13-18 (.722) at the faceoff X for UNC.
- Krieg (10 saves) and Kent Goode (1 save) combined for the defensive showing between the pipes.
- With the win, UNC has now won 25-straight season openers.
- Carolina improves to 6-0 all-time against the Bears.
- The three goals allowed is the fewest since Feb. 11, 2017, when UNC defeated Furman 7-3.
- Friday was the first time the Tar Heels scored 25-or-more in a game since posting 27 against High Point in 2021.
- North Carolina improves to 137-31 under head coach Joe Breschi when scoring 10+ goals, and 86-11 under Breschi when allowing fewer than 10 goals.
