Gymnastics Returns Home To Host Temple Friday Night

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – After four meets on the road, the University of North Carolina gymnastics team returns to Carmichael Arena to host Temple on Friday, Feb. 24, at 7:30 p.m. ET. Its marks the program's final East Atlantic Gymnastics League dual meet and its penultimate home meet of the season.Â
The meet will be aired on ACCNX with Matt Krause and Sydney Snead on call.Â
Admission is free and open to the public. Following the meet, there will be an autograph session with the team.
The Tar Heels were recently crowned the 2023 EAGL regular season champion for the second-straight year after producing a 5-0 mark in league action so far. UNC will aim to make it its second undefeated regular season following Friday's meet against the Owls.Â
In its last outing on Feb. 19 at Pitt, the Tar Heels impressed with a dominant 195.700-194.950 victory behind the meet's highest scores on all four rotations. Lali Dekanoidze took home titles on both bars (9.925) and vault (9.875) while Julia Knower had the top mark on floor (9.900).
The dynamic sophomore duo has a combined 18 individual event titles so far this season with Knower also claiming four all-around wins.
The best team score North Carolina has produced so far this season holds strong at 196.325 from Jan. 28. After seven weeks of competition, UNC is ranked No. 28 in the Road to Nationals poll after being tabbed No. 27 during weeks four and five.
The Tar Heels are also slotted at No. 20 in the country on bars, the second highest among EAGL foes. Carolina has had the highest team score on bars in every meet since the season opener.
Dekanoidze leads UNC on bars with three scores of 9.975 this season to solidify herself as the best gymnast on the event in program history. Her national qualifying score of 9.940 over the past seven weeks is currently ranked seventh in the nation and first in the EAGL.
Also holding the top spot amongst conference competitors is Knower, whose NQS of 9.905 on floor is the best in the EAGL. As a team, Carolina ranks second in the league on both bars (49.205) and beam (48.825), third on vault (49.015) and fourth on floor (49.005).
