Three-Run Seventh Propels Softball To 8-6 Victory At Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. – Behind a season-high 13 hits, the Carolina softball team (10-15, 1-2 ACC) came-from-behind to defeat Coastal Carolina 8-6 on Tuesday night. Talia Hannappel earned her first victory of the season in the circle and her third as a Tar Heel overall, while seven different Tar Heels recorded a hit at the plate.

After Carolina took an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first behind five hits, including an Abby Settlemyre home run, and an error, the Chanticleers (23-4) came storming back. Coastal Carolina plated one run in the third, before stringing together five runs in the fourth to take a 6-4 lead.

Alex Brown made it a one-run game in the fifth with an RBI base hit, before the Tar Heels plated three runs on four hits in the top of the seventh, making it 8-6.

Hannappel shut down Coastal in the bottom of the seventh, allowing just one hit before a fly out to centerfield sealed the victory for the Tar Heels.

Notables:

Carolina's 13 hits are a new season high for the team. It was the most hits in the game for the Tar Heels since March 26, 2022, vs. NC State (15)
Talia Hannappel earned her first win of the season in the circle, throwing three scorelss innings, allowing just three hits with a strikeout. It was Hannappel's third win as a Tar Heel and her first since March 11, 2022, against Boston College
Lilli Backes struck out the side in the top of the first. It was the second inning she has done that in this season
Four different Tar Heels had multi-hit games against the Chanticleers. Abby Settlemyre and Alex Brown each went 3-of-4 at the plate with two RBIs a piece while Skyler Brooks went 2-of-4, with Brooks tallying a RBI
Carlie Myrtle pinch hit in the top of the seventh, tying the game with an RBI base hit, her fourth RBI and hit of the season
Settlemyre, who hit a two-run home run in the top of first, is now tied with Kiersten Licea for the most home runs of the team
Kiersten Licea now has 25 hits on the season, matching her season career-best that she set in 2021
Carolina now leads the all-time series over Coastal Carolina 27-4 and has won the last four games
