March 18, 2023 | Women's Gymnastics
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – A record-breaking season for University of North Carolina gymnast Lali Dekanoidze has culminated in the first postseason award of her career, as she was named the 2023 East Atlantic Gymnastics League Co-Specialist of the Year.
Dekanoidze shares the honor with LIU's Mara Titarsolej, as announced by the league at the EAGL Championships on Saturday evening.
A vault and bars specialist, the sophomore has been a force on both events throughout the 2023 campaign. She has matched her career-best 9.900 on vault three times this year alone, which ranks fourth all-time in UNC history.
The Matthews, North Carolina native has been especially dominant on bars, first breaking the school record with a 9.975 in the home opener on Jan. 9. She matched that score two more times during the season.
Her national qualifying score of 9.950 on bars has led the EAGL throughout the season, also ranking eighth in the country. She holds the highest national ranking of any gymnast in the conference. Â
In total, seven of her 11 routines on bars have been 9.925+ while five of her vault scores have been 9.875+. Â
Dekanoidze won 14 individual event titles during the season, and was a double-event winner on both vault and bars on six occasions. She was recently named First Team All-EAGL on both vault and bars, being crowned EAGL champion on bars (9.950).Â
No stranger to garnering awards, Dekanoidze was tabbed the EAGL Specialist of the Week on three occasions during the regular season, bringing her career total up to eight weekly honors.Â
Also excelling in the classroom, she earned a spot on this year's All-EAGL Scholastic Team. Â
