Men's Basketball Dominates BC, 85-61, To Reach ACC Quarters
March 8, 2023 | Men's Basketball
by Matt Bowers
GREENSBORO, N.C.—Caleb Love scored 22 points and RJ Davis added 18 as seventh-seeded North Carolina blew by No. 10 seed Boston College, 85-61, in the ACC Tournament second round on Wednesday night in the Greensboro Coliseum.
Â
Seeking to bolster their NCAA Tournament resume, the Tar Heels advance to Thursday's quarterfinal round to face No. 2 seed Virginia at 7 p.m.
Carolina improved to 20-12 this season and has won 20 games for the 63rd time overall and second year in a row. The Eagles fell to 16-17.
Â
Love posted his 11th 20-point game this season, hitting 9 of 20 field goal tries, including 3 of 8 three-pointers. Davis hit 4 of 6 threes and 7 of 12 shots overall. Armando Bacot had 10 points and six rebounds.
Â
The Tar Heels dished out 16 assists against just seven turnovers and shot 54.8 percent from the floor (including 60.0 percent in the second half).
Carolina scored 85 points, its highest offensive output since beating Clemson, 91-71, on February 11. The Tar Heels are 12-2 this season when scoring 80 or more.
"We talked about from an offensive standpoint, for us to have success, one, it started on the defensive end, so we can get the rebound and we can get out in transition," UNC head coach Hubert Davis said. "Two, we had to have great spacing and balance, ball movement and player movement to give us an opportunity to attack the paint and drive so that we could get to the free-throw line. And I just felt like we did that really well tonight."
Â
Carolina started the game strong, hitting 9 of its first 14 shots and going on a 17-2 run over a span of 6:08 take a 23-10 lead. UNC led by double digits the rest of the game.
The Tar Heels dominated across the board in the opening 20 minutes, compiling 10 assists and just one turnover on 16 baskets with a 12-0 edge in points off turnovers. The Tar Heels hit 7 of 13 three-pointers before halftime.
Â
Bacot sprained his left ankle and missed the last several minutes of the first half. Medical personnel re-taped his ankle, and he started the second half, eventually playing 18 total minutes and resting his ankle for the latter portions of the win.
"I just took a wrong step and I rolled it a little bit, but I'm (gonna) be fine," Bacot said to ESPN after the game. "I mean, it was a must win. I didn't want to leave it out there with them to have a chance to come back, so I told the coaches, I told Doug (Halverson), I told Jonas (Sahratian), I'd give them a good four-to-six minutes to just give us a bump. We ended up coming out and getting a good enough lead to where I could sit out (the rest of the game)."
Â
The Tar Heels roared out of the locker room with a 15-2 run to take a 58-31 lead with 14:27 remaining in the second half. The 27-point margin was their largest lead against an ACC opponent this season (the previous high was 25 versus Clemson).
"Coach (Davis) always tells us to push the pace and run our offense with pace," said Love. "I feel like we did that well tonight as far as pitching ahead and getting a lot of draft screens. Our defense is our best offense, so when we do good defensive stops, get steals, we can get out there in transition and we can run, and that just makes our offense so much easier."
