Softball Pushes Past Campbell, 5-1
April 19, 2023 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Carolina softball team (20-25, 8-9 ACC) earned its seventh victory in its last eight games on Wednesday night with a 5-1 win over Campbell in Anderson Stadium. It's the Tar Heels' seventh straight win over the Camels (30-13) going back to the 2016 season.
For the sixth time this season, the Tar Heels had a multi-home run outing. Bri Stubbs tallied her first long ball of the season, the second in her career, and Kiersten Licea hit a solo home run for the second game in a row.
Lilli Backes, who has thrown 26 of Carolina's last 27 innings, tallied her twelfth win of the season with another pitching gem in the circle. In the sophomore left-hander's eleventh complete game of the season, she allowed just one run and four hits in seven innings, while tallying a career-best eight strikeouts.
The Tar Heels got on the board early with both Stubbs' two-run home run and Licea's one-run shot to take a 3-0 lead after the first inning.
Campbell scored its only run of the game in the top of the second, hitting a two-out triple followed by an RBI double to make it 3-1.
Carolina took a four-run advantage in the bottom of the second with RBIs from Carsyn Snead and Stubbs to go up 5-1, a cushion they help onto for the remainder of the game.
Alex Brown, who went two-of-two at the plate, now has a team-best 16 multi-hit games this season. Stubbs also had two hits at the plate and a career-best three RBIs, while Carlie Myrtle and Carsyn Snead each had a pair of hits.
