Baseball Drops Series To Boston College
April 23, 2023 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Cameron Leary hit a grand slam in the eighth inning, and No. 20 Boston College defeated No. 18 North Carolina 9-4 on Saturday night for its first series win over the Tar Heels.
The Eagles, who won the series opener on Friday night 9-8 in 10 innings, were 3-31 all-time against UNC and 0-17 in Chapel Hill before this weekend.
UNC starter Connor Bovair pitched 7.1 innings of one-run ball before hitting Travis Honeyman with his 100th pitch. Boviar, who retired 11 in a row at one point, was charged with two runs while scattering five hits and striking out three.
"Connor Bovair was outstanding," UNC head coach Scott Forbes said. "He's been good all year. He's the one kid that sticks out the most to me – of our returners with experience – that has taken another step."
With Bovair out of the game, the Eagles touched up the Tar Heels' relievers for seven runs on six hits.
A hit by Joe Vetrano and a walk to Patrick Roche loaded the bases for Leary with one out in the eighth and turned a 2-1 deficit into a 5-2 lead.
Honeyman delivered a two-run double in the ninth, as did Sam McNulty.
Charlie Coon (1-0) retired the only two batters he faced to get the win, while Joe Ryan pitched a shutdown bottom of the eighth after Boston College regained the lead in the top half and earned his second save. Nelson Berkwich (2-2) took the loss.
Vance Honeycutt hit a two-run home run in the ninth, and the Tar Heels loaded the bases with two outs, but Ryan induced a ground ball out to end the game.
Honeycutt, Casey Cook, and Mac Horvath collected a pair of hits.
UNC loaded the bases with nobody out in the first and then with one out in the second. Jackson Van De Brake drew a walk in the second to plate the Tar Heels' only run of the first two innings. Thier second run scored on a sacrifice fly by Tomas Frick in fifth.
"When you get that many base runners against a good team, somebody has to step up and capitalize," Forbes said. "We didn't get it done, and they did."
The series finale will be Sunday at noon.
