April 25, 2023 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Eight University of North Carolina women's lacrosse players earned All-ACC and All-Freshman honors, as announced by the Atlantic Coast Conference on Tuesday afternoon. UNC's eight total selections are the most of any school in the league.
As voted on by the conference's 10 head coaches, the All-ACC First and Second Teams consist of three attackers, three midfielders, three defenders, one goalkeeper and six at-large bids. The All-Freshman Team is composed of the top 12 rookies regardless of position.
The Tar Heels' two first team picks include Emily Nalls and Brooklyn Walker-Welch, while Reilly Casey, Alyssa Long and Caitlyn Wurzburger secured a spot on the second team. Caroline Godine, Marissa White and Kaleigh Harden garnered All-Freshman accolades.Â
In addition to having a league-leading eight honorees across the three All-ACC teams, North Carolina is tied for the most selections to both the second team and all-freshman team with three on each.
Recently named a top-25 nominee for the prestigious Tewaaraton Award, Nalls leads the team with 19 caused turnovers, also ranking second with 20 ground balls and third with 35 draw controls. The senior defender was named Second Team All-America and Second Team All-ACC a season ago.
Walker-Welch, one of three sophomores to land on the first team, ranks third on the roster with 10 caused turnovers and 17 ground balls. She's a key piece of one of the top defenses in the country and was tabbed to the All-Freshman Team in 2022.
Earning the first postseason honors of their careers are Casey, a redshirt-sophomore attacker, and Long, a junior midfielder. Casey has a team-leading 29 assists while ranking second in points (56) and goals (26). In the midst of a breakout junior campaign is Long, who sits at fifth with 28 draw controls and sixth in both goals (11) and points (19).  Â
Wurzburger, who finds herself on the All-ACC Second Team for the second year in a row, tops the roster with 30 goals and 56 points. The junior attacker is 15 points away from 200 in her career and just one assist shy of moving to fifth all-time in program history.
Both rookie attackers, Godine ranks third with 38 points behind 19 goals and 19 assists, while White – the lone Tar Heel who has scored in every contest this year – has a team-high 35 goals. Harden, a midfielder, is third with 35 draw controls and notched her first career hat trick on April 20.Â
Carolina, which checked in at No. 6 in the latest IWLCAÂ poll, begins its quest for its seventh-straight conference title Wednesday, April 26, during the ACC Championships presented by Ally in Charlotte.Â
