CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – After a season on the West Coast, Indya Nivar is headed home.
A 5-10 guard from Apex, N.C., Nivar has signed with the University of North Carolina women's basketball program and will transfer to Chapel Hill ahead of the 2023-24 school year, Tar Heel coach Courtney Banghart announced on Friday.
Nivar, who earned North Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year and Ms. Basketball honors as a senior at Apex Friendship High School, spent her freshman season at Stanford, where she appeared in all 35 games for the Cardinal in 2022-23.
"We are thrilled to bring Indya back home," Banghart said. "She's a dynamic two-way player who will help us on both sides of the ball and a high-level competitor that we recruited hard out of high school. Her motor and competitiveness will fit right into the culture here, and we can't wait for her to wear Carolina blue."
Nivar averaged 12.6 minutes and 3.2 points per game as Stanford won the regular-season Pac-12 title and earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. She played a season-high 27 minutes in the team's matchup with Utah in January and made her only start in the following game, a win over Colorado.
Coming out of high school, Nivar was a McDonald's All-American and Jordan Brand Classic All-American. She was ranked No. 20 in her class and helped Apex Friendship to a state runner-up finish as a senior. She also has represented USA Basketball, earning a gold medal as part of the U.S. team at the 2022 FIBA Americas U18 Championship in Argentina.
"I chose UNC because it feels like family and I believe that the coaches will be able to help me reach my goals on and off the court," Nivar said. "Academics are really important to me, and I felt that UNC met my needs fully. I am ready for new beginnings and can't wait to be back home surrounded by friends and family."
Nivar is the third transfer to sign with the UNC women's basketball program this spring, joining Maria Gakdeng and Lexi Donarski. Along with five incoming freshmen, Nivar's addition brings the total number of newcomers joining the Carolina program to eight.
