May 19, 2023 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Four University of North Carolina women's lacrosse standouts received All-America recognition by ILWomen, highlighted by Brooklyn Walker-Welch being named to the first team.Â
Walker-Welch, a sophomore, is the lone underclassman on the first team. She is joined by fellow defender Emily Nalls who landed on the second team, while attackers Reilly Casey and Caitlyn Wurzburger both were named honorable mention.
Anchoring Carolina's defensive unit that limited opponents to a league-leading 8.42 goals per game – which also ranks sixth nationally – are Walker-Welch and Nalls. They were both tabbed First Team All-ACC and to the ACC All-Tournament Team in addition to being named Third Team All-America by USA Lacrosse Magazine.Â
A year after receiving honorable mention praise, Walker-Welch found herself as a First Team All-American this season for setting a new single-season career high in ground balls (29), ranking second in that category as well as in caused turnovers (18).Â
Nalls, who earned second team accolades for the second straight year, led UNC in ground balls (33) for the third year in a row, also owning a team-high and career-best 30 caused turnovers. The senior was a top-25 honoree for the prestigious Tewaaraton Award.
Leading the Tar Heels offensively were Casey and Wurzburger who tallied 72 points apiece. Casey, a redshirt sophomore, set single-season career-highs in goals (38), assists (34) and points (72) which included a career-best seven points on two occasions. Â
Wurzburger capped off the year with a team-best 35 assists, also with a career-high 37 goals to rank third on the roster. The junior earned her 200th career point on May 14, becoming just the 13th Tar Heel in program history to reach the milestone. Her 94 career assists rank fourth all-time in the UNC record book.Â
The duo also collected honorable mention honors by USA Lacrosse Magazine as well as Second Team All-ACC accolades.Â
