Eight Tar Heels Land On USA Lacrosse Magazine All-America Teams

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Eight University of North Carolina women's lacrosse players have earned USA Lacrosse Magazine All-America recognition for their performances during the 2023 season, as announced by the organization Tuesday afternoon.Â
UNC's eight selections are the second most in the nation.
Garnering third team honors are Emily Nalls and Brooklyn Walker-Welch as Reilly Casey, Caroline Godine, Alyssa Long, Alecia Nicholas, Marissa White and Caitlyn Wurzburger were named honorable mention.
Anchoring the Tar Heels' defensive unit that has limited opponents to a league-leading 8.61 goals per game – which also ranks eighth nationally – are Nalls and Walker-Welch. Nalls leads the roster with 27 caused turnovers followed by Walker-Welch with 13 in third, while the duo has collected 28 and 23 ground balls, respectively.Â
Leading UNC offensively as a freshman is White with a team-high 40 goals, which includes five hat tricks marked by a career-high six on April 7. Godine, a fellow rookie who ranks third in both assists (22) and points (50) as well as fourth in goals (28), led all players with nine goals and 11 points in the ACC Tournament.Â
Also guiding North Carolina on the attack are Casey and Wurzburger who rank first and second, respectively, with 31 and 30 assists. Casey's 60 points are second among all Tar Heels and her 29 goals are third, while Wurzburger sits in first with 63 points and second with 33 goals.
Having a breakout junior campaign is Long, a midfielder who has amassed 16 goals, seven assists, 23 points, nine ground balls and 31 draw controls. Nicholas owns a .468 save percentage between the pipes and her 8.71 goals-against average ranks 10th in the country.Â
The Tar Heels are back in action Friday, May 12, at 2 p.m. ET to host Sacred Heart at Dorrance Field in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. No. 4-seed UNC is making its 18th straight, and 24th overall, NCAA Tournament appearance.Â
