AUSTIN, TEXAS— Three University of North Carolina athletes advanced to the final round in their respective events on the first day of action on Wednesday at the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the Mike A. Myers Track & Soccer Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas.
Jesse Hunt and Ethan Strand both advanced from the semifinals of the men's 1,500-meter run to Friday's final. Hunt finished ninth in Wednesday's preliminary round in 3:39.80, while Strand took 11th place in a time of 3:39.83. Strand was fifth in his prelim heat, and Hunt was sixth in his heat, earning a time-qualifying slot in the final.
The final round of the 1,500m will come on Friday at approximately 8:12 p.m. Central Time.
Tar Heel Craig Saddler II also advanced to Friday, posting a personal-best time of 49.57 in the men's 400-meter hurdles. The finals of the 400mH are scheduled for approximately 9:27 p.m. CT on Friday.
James Joycey earned honorable mention All-America honors in the men's hammer throw, posting an effort of 65.10 meters (213-7 feet).
Marshall Williamson also grabbed honorable mention All-America status when he finished 21st overall in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 8:59.53.
The NCAA Outdoor Championships will resume on Thursday in Austin.Â
