Banghart Takes Reins As WBCA President
July 28, 2023 | Women's Basketball
UNC women's basketball coach Courtney Banghart recently presided over her first in-person board meeting as president of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). Banghart, who is headed into her fifth season as the Carolina coach, is starting a two-year term as leader of the coaches' organization.
Â
"The sport of women's basketball is at such an exciting time," Banghart said. "Serving our organization in this capacity is both an honor and a responsibility, and it will get my best. I look forward to working with our coaches to ensure this inflection point for our sport is fully realized."
Â
The meeting welcomed new members to the board and also reviewed news and updates from the past year. Among personnel announcements was the appointment of UNC alum Stephanie (Lawrence) Yelton, the head coach at University of West Florida, to the WBCA's executive committee.
Â
The meeting also included a presentation about the 2023-24 Play4Kay initiative, benefiting the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, which is the WBCA's charity of choice. UNC will once again host a Play4Kay game, the date of which will be announced this fall.
Â
Founded in 1981, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association is the professional association for coaches of women's and girls' basketball at all levels of competition. The WBCA offers educational resources that coaches need to help make themselves better leaders, teachers and mentors to their players; provides opportunities for coaches to connect with peers in the profession; serves as the unifying voice of a diverse community of coaches to the organizations that control the game; and celebrates those coaches, players and other individuals who excel each year and contribute to the advancement of the sport.
